I played a game of Stars & Lasers at the club Monday night and thought that I would give one of the new scenarios a run through, so played a simple one from the upcoming supplement.
A hidden scout ship with important information needs to be found and the information must be retrieved, and returned to your own territory.
Two small forces rushed to find the hidden scout ship in the asteroid field, who would get to it first…
The forces were 600 points each –
My opponent had one light cruiser, two destroyers, one frigate and one corvette, with a flight of fighters to deal with any missiles, plus extra engineers to help keep his shields working.
I went for a slightly heavier force, with two light cruisers, two frigates and two corvettes, with some extra engineers as well.
The first turn saw his ships rush into the asteroid field scanning for the scout ship, and by the time I managed to get my ships moving there was only a couple of places left to look.
It didn’t take long to locate the scout ship, I was to far away, but his corvette was in a good position to get to it, I fired off a single missile towards where the scout ship was but he avoided the missile easily.
So the race was now on, all he had to do was turn the corvette around and use it’s superior speed to get it to safety, I was a little worried now…. But the positioning of his corvette was not great which meant it would have to come closer to my ships before it could get around an asteroid and start it’s run for the table edge.
I hit it with everything I had on four ships and destroyed the corvette before it could run, I then had to pray that I could get one of my ships activated quick enough to retrieve the information before my opponent did.
It seemed that I had lady luck on my side! I moved my light cruiser close enough to pick up the information and turned towards my table edge and started my run for safety, I moved every ship I could towards it to try and give it support.
I had three ships now close by giving point defence support and I started to get some damage on his ships, he lost a couple and now it was looking like it was going to go my way for once, all I had to do was move as fast as I could towards my table edge… easy!
He sent everything he had at my light cruiser and all the ships trying to protect it, he did lots of damage, but I still kept heading for the table edge.
It was turn four, It was looking good for me, we were down to just a couple of ships each, and I moved at full speed for the table edge and victory…. and I was about 1” short!!!
All I had to do was survive another turn, hey it would be fine I had taken almost no damage on my light cruiser, and I had managed to raise my shields, it should be safe, I wasn’t worried….
I should have been!
I took two hits taking both my shields down, then I took one hit from his frigate, and we get our first critical hit of the night, which causes numerous explosions on board, which then causes another critical hit, which hits one of my hardpoints, and yep I had missiles loaded… if only I had fired the damn things earlier!… that was it, one destroyed light cruiser that was within 1” of victory, oh how he laughed!! ( ok so did I, it was hilarious )
I still had my corvette which hadn’t moved this turn, I slid it forward and retrieved the information and again sat 1” away from the edge, and waited for the new turn.
Both of his ships moved in and fired at my corvette to try and duplicate what had happened the previous turn, but this time they weren’t as successful, I moved my corvette from the table to safety and victory!!!!
What a great game, it was so close, and him destroying my cruiser that way was so funny, neither of us expected that to happen, it was brilliant.
I have another game planned for next week, lets hope my luck holds out for that one.
