A playtest of the new racing rules.

This was the second race in a campaign race season using my soon to be released rules, my son and I are running two main racers through a season as a last check of the rules while doing all the last-minute adjustments and proof reading.

While playing this race we spotted one or two small omissions from the rules that have now been added, and a couple of unnecessary rules that have now been removed!

Any way back to the race… The two main vehicles have got completely different builds which makes them totally different on the track, my son’s vehicle is super-fast with no armour (red vehicle) where mine is really slow with good armour (blue vehicle), both vehicles have a good varied selection of upgrades and mine has a couple of illegal upgrades just to spice things up a bit.

We are both also running a second vehicle each just to make it four vehicles on the track, these are again both different as we are not worried how they actually do over the season.

My son had no luck in the first race as his two vehicles collided on a tight turn and my passenger finished them off with some shooting from an illegal pistol he smuggled on board… oh and a track side shooter didn’t help him much either!

This race was done on a fairly narrow track which I was hoping would give my slower vehicles an advantage, or at the very least take away my son’s vehicles speed advantage, his main vehicle had a good 5” speed advantage over mine.

I started in pole position as I won the previous race and my second vehicle started just behind, then came my son’s two vehicles… I got an early lead by hitting one of my vehicles boosters as I went into the first bend, with my second car a little way behind. This was a good start for me, I just had to keep building a gap between me and my son’s faster vehicle and I should be in a good position hopefully by the last lap.

I managed to get around the first corner with a good lead on the chasing vehicles, it looked like the very tight track was going to be good for me.

My second vehicle (green) just could hold my son’s vehicles off, the (grey) vehicle had already passed it and the (red) vehicle was soon to go cruising past!

Things almost went really badly again for my son (and really well for me) he crashed into his own vehicle trying to squeeze through a very tight gap, and a turn or two later and his grey vehicle was out of the race and his red vehicle was badly damaged.

But that didn’t stop him, he soon passed my grey vehicle and was starting to close the gap on my blue vehicle, I was starting to get very worried at this point. I was hoping that my son would go too fast and lose control and crash again.

No, he kept his speed up and his vehicle steady around all the tight turns and started to close on my red vehicle.

So close to the end of the first lap, as you can see from the picture below, his red vehicle was closing fast on my slower vehicle.

I kept in front for most of the next lap somehow, but by the start of the third and final lap, that damn red vehicle had gone past my vehicles and was starting to pull away!

By the time we were on the straight leading to the last bend of the third lap and last lap the red vehicle had a good lead on my vehicles.

But my blue vehicle managed to get right up alongside it and my passenger leaned out and fired at point blank range and… missed!

I was hoping to try and do enough damage to put it out of the race, but no I think my passenger had left his glasses back in the pits!

The red vehicle powered away around the final bend leaving me wondering what went wrong.

Well, that was fun and very enjoyable, I learned that even with a slow vehicle you still have a good chance of winning, but I think before the next race of the season I will do some adjustments to my upgrades, I need some more speed so I will be looking at another engine upgrade or two and maybe even more system upgrades to help with the handling of the vehicle.

This race like the previous one was played on rather a small track, well a narrow track, next time I think we will put out a full size 6’ x 4’ table to get a big track with some really big wide straights just to see how fast I can get my vehicle to go.

      Hi Jack,

Yes even though it was only a playtest and a quickly set up track, it really was a lot of fun.

I will be re-doing some upgrades on my vehicle before the next race in the campaign season, it really is too slow as it is.
