Free scenarios No.5

Well I have finally managed to get another set of two free Stars & Lasers finished.

These two scenarios are kind of cool as they were not written by me!

They were actually written by a someone that has written many scenarios and campaigns for other games systems, and after a little gentle persuasion he agreed to write these scenarios for me ( I am hoping that he may write some more when he gets time )

These two scenarios are based around some interesting ships, the first scenario is a battle between two Auxiliary Merchant Cruisers, based on two ships from WW1.

And the second scenario is a great hide and seek type game where a ship is disguised as a freighter and is hiding in a convoy, will the heavy cruiser find it and destroy it, or will the hidden ship destroy the heavy cruiser…

I would like to thank Vic Dobson for finding the time to write these great scenarios for me.

And while I am on the subject of great scenarios, I have almost finished a really interesting simple mini campaign of seven linked scenarios, these were originally written for Star Trek games, but the author kindly gave his permission for me to convert them over to Stars & Lasers, thank you again Vic.

They follow the exploits of a proud warrior as he tries to fight for the honour of his people following the end of a four year war, which ended in the peace treaty that he hates.

He and his crew take their battlecruiser into enemy territory to see if they can get back some honour or at least die fighting.

He battles though six hard battles ending in a death or glory fight against overwhelming odds…

The scenario that starts this mini campaign off has become one of my favourite battles, I love playing this one…

I have a battle at the club on Monday ( I am standing in for a club mate that can’t make it ) it is the second round of the club league.

I have my ships ready, all I need now is some dice that roll high and I will be in with a chance, I am going up against a good player and he is using some nasty ships, and the scenario is a hard one, so I know it is not going to be easy…

I will try and get some pictures of the game and will put up a battle report to show how badly I lost.

So, lots to watch out for over the next couple of weeks.

    Hi Mac,

Thanks for the write up – I’m glad the scenarios worked out OK for S&L! Naval history is replete with endless inspiration for scenarios – all anyone needs is little bit of time reading a book or online, a bit of imagination & a copy of the rules …

I love the Kormorans data sheet, it just looks so nasty, but despite all those guns and missile launchers its still just a freighter – if its initial attack goes wrong in any way the lack of armour, shields and PDS will bear bitter fruit – in an open fight the heavy cruiser can handle the raider easily! But getting the ambush just right is hard and the cruiser might just get lucky looking for the raider …

I’ve got an idea for a (smaller) S&L version of the 1914 Battle of Heligoland Bight for S&L – still working out a nice balance of forces for both sides.

    Hi Vic,
No mate, thank you for your time and effort in producing these scenarios for Stars & Lasers, I am glad you like the game enough to do this.
I did try and do this scenario myself but could not get it right, so I took the easy way out and went with just two straight Cruisers fighting it out, but your version is great and keeps you on the edge playing either side.
As the Cruiser you never know which ship is the Kormorans and you don’t want to get too close or it could all go horribly wrong, and as the Kormorans you have to decide when to attack, if you pick the wrong time then it could all go horribly wrong for the weaker ship.

And let’s not forget the first scenario “A very unsuitable duty…” the fight between the two AMC’s is good fun as well, with the minus two shooting all the time mixed in with my awful die rolling, the proverbial “couldn’t hit a barn door” springs to mind, I even miss at point blank range!!!

These are both great fun to play, and again I thank you for your time and effort.

I look forward to seeing the Battle of Helgoland Bight when you have done it mate, there were a lot of ships involved ( I had to google it! )

I am putting the finishing touches to the linked scenarios at the moment, I am hoping to get these finished sometime next week, I am really hoping that I have done them justice in the conversion over to Stars & Lasers.

    Mac
